A new equality drive by Commons leader Harriet Harman will ensure that they are "treated fairly". Members of cults and new religions like Scientology will get similar protection under the Government's Equality Bill.
A code of conduct has been drawn up by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
This says the legislation should apply to vegans - such as Sir Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills - who refuse to eat or wear any animal products. A Commission spokesman said: "This is about someone for whom being vegan or vegetarian is central to who they are.
"Parliament makes the law, the courts interpret it and we offer factual guidance where necessary."
Meanwhile, the Government is on a collision course with company bosses over efforts to INCREASE the number of women in the boardroom.
Businesses would be forced to report on the progress they are making on improving "the gender balance" among their directors.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "When more than half of graduates are women, it is completely unacceptable that some of our top 100 public companies have not a single woman on their boards.
"If we do not see a dramatic change in the composition of company boards in the future, we'll need to consider some serious action."
